putting it where the sun don’t shine

After only getting 3 hours of sleep the night before, I was able to go to bed early–around 10:00pm–last night. However, I woke up at 3:00am and got out of bed. Usually when I wake up really early like this I find revelation that shakes me up and changes my perspective. It’s that period of time when others are asleep and it seems the world has stopped. Waking up when the sun is not out yet is a very foreign experience for me, but I was looking forward to what the day would bring…a revelation was coming!

I spent some time on twitter and connected with some friends, then found my wife awake at 5:30am. So, I went to the grocery store and picked up some things to make breakfast. I passed one car on the road…the world was silent. It was dark and drizzly, yet not cold. I found myself to be the only one shopping at this early hour. I had the store all to myself. Had a nice chat with the grocery clerk, filled up the tank in my Blazer, and went home and made breakfast. Even though I was running around, there was tremendous peace at the stillness of the world and internally I was feeling very content.

After breakfast I watched a fishing show on tv. I used to watch this show as an atheist and never thought twice about the fact that the hosts are Christians and that they preach the gospel at the end of the program on national tv. However, as a Christian I am in awe of how such an ordinary thing (a fishing show on tv) could have such an eternal impact on others. To know that this show airs weekly and has done so for many years under the radar of secular criticism just moves me! This was the start of my revelation for today. Then, as the sun began to rise and light came upon our day, the full revelation of what I needed to reflect on came to my eyes. I was struck by the magnificence of nature. How it is all around, yet we don’t realize it is a reflection of God. That he is there in his creation as an example of his power. If we just open our eyes and recognize his hand in every little thing we can see, the impact of who God is can be known to all.

1-24-2009-31Romans 1:20-
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

Through the peace and joy in the stillness that God provided for me today, I was reminded to reflect on the awesome wonder of his creation all around me. God is all around us, whether we choose to believe in him or not. How can I connect his people to his creation so that they too can come to the knowledge that God’s eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, yet not understood? I am excited to continue my journey in church planting and disciple making this year. In the dark stillness, God was there for me today.
