Daily Devotion: Proverbs 3

Have you ever wondered why it is that some people that seem to always do the wrong things never have it come back to bite them in the behind? Usually we just attribute it to life not being fair or their being lucky. However, sometimes we get jealous, envious, or resentful.

Did you know that there is great power in making mistakes and learning from them? Imagine what life must be like if you made the wrong decisions yet no one ever corrected you. You’d keep on making those wrong decisions until something unfortunate happened. You may get by for awhile, but if the wrong actions are consistently followed there will be consequences.

God is love and we spend too much time thinking about love on our terms instead of God’s terms. Just as there are people in our lives that we love, we can’t just gush loving sentiments on them 24 hours per day! For those we love and care for, we want them to be out of harm’s way and to learn to follow the right path. For those of you that are parents, you know that discipline and stern teachings are a necessity at times and that we do this because we love our children and want what is best for them. We can’t give them soda and cookies and let them play all day and not do their homework. If we understand that concept, why can’t we understand the concept that God will correct us when necessary and that it is a great showing of His love for us? In fact, Proverbs 3 explains in verses 11 and 12:

11 My child, do not reject the Lord’s discipline,
and don’t get angry when he corrects you.
12 The Lord corrects those he loves,
just as parents correct the child they delight in.

So, that person that you think of that seems to be so lucky that God must favor them more than you probably isn’t getting correction because they are being left to do things in their own way. Why would God spend time trying to correct someone that doesn’t want nor understand living a life of righteousness in devotion to God? He lets them operate in their own world living their own life and sometimes that freedom allows them to get a pass in some things. However, be thankful that God has chosen you to receive correction as He is calling you to a life of righteousness and worship of Him. Honor God with your obedience to His wisdom and correction and learn the life of peace that comes your way as a result.
