Jonah

I’m currently working on a sermon series for the 4 chapters of Jonah. It amazes me how often people know a little bit about something and then choose to be complacent in that small amount of information rather than seek out more knowledge.

As I study and prepare for this series, it has become very evident to me that many Christians know about as much of the story of Jonah as atheists and those following other deities. Whenever I randomly ask others about Jonah, they tell me it’s a story of a man that gets swallowed into the belly of a whale. Beyond that, no one seems to have much interest in anything else.

Jonah is only 4 chapters long, so it surprises me that more people wouldn’t sit down and read it for all its worth. It’s such a rich story with so many different aspects that reflect upon who we are, who God is, why Jesus became man, and how the Old Testament is revealed through the New Testament.

I am so thankful that God put this short book of the Bible into my preaching series and I pray that I will really be used by God to enlighten the church as to why this book of only 4 chapters should have such a powerful meaning and relevance into their lives.

So many themes available to preach a series on, but I chose something that I think we all can relate to, which is no matter how far we try to run from God, He always has his eyes upon us and is always in control. Here is a teaser video I’m using to introduce the theme to our church:
